ANNOUNCING THE CLIF BAR – 2012 Moving Forward Mary-thon Sponsorship!

Published by Mary on February 4th, 2012

“The wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings. Let food be your medicine.” - Hippocrates

I have some GREAT news and I don’t know how to announce it other than to simply blurt it out!  Clif Bars is sponsoring the 2012 Moving Forward Mary-thon with a GREAT product donation for those Premium Members (Full and Half) who cross the finish line in 2012!  It is such an honor to have their support and we are so grateful!

Here’s how it all came together!

Just over 7 years ago, I decided to make some major life changes after experiencing some major health issues.  One of those changes involved some strict rules with regard to my eating habits – rules that I vowed I would follow for the rest of my life.  The reason for that decision was that I have a problem saying “no” to pretty much any food that is placed in front of me and my weight and overall health at the time testified of that.  I can easily name the foods I don’t like:  carrots, lima beans, cheesecake, vanilla and milk.  But – when it comes to the foods I DO like – the list is endless.  The worst part about it is that not only do I love food – but I have trouble controlling how much I eat.   For most foods, portion size for me was the whole bag of chips, the whole box of candy, the super-size entree and the family size portion of fried cheese curds (I love cheese curds).  I can’t “eat just one” – I’ve tried to control myself through diets and portion control tips for years and years and finally came to the realization that – I just can’t.  So, I took drastic measures by eliminating some foods from my diet altogether and added some alternatives that still satisfied my cravings in a healthy way.  One of those additions to my diet – way back when – was suggested to me by my son, Jonathan.  He began eating the Clif Chocolate Mint Builder bars – and thought they would be something I would enjoy.   He was absolutely right!   I have a Clif Builder Bar for breakfast each day and a Clif Bar of some sort for an afternoon snack.  If my calculations are correct, I have eaten over 4,000 Clif Bars in the past 7 years – (crazy, huh?)  I LOVE them and look forward to them EVERY day!

I did some research on the Clif Bar company and was even more thrilled with their product after I read their “food philosophy” and commitment to community and the environment.   The Clif Bar company is very community minded and a supporter of many sporting events, athletes and local communities in a variety of ways.   I decided to apply for sponsorship but knew that with or without a sponsorship, I planned to recommend the Clif Bar products to our Mary-thoners.

Here are a few tidbits about Clif Bars and their company:

On their webpage (www.clifbar.com) they have the following description:

Who We Are:  Clif Bar and Company started on a bike ride.  Our founder, Gary, took a bite of another energy bar and thought to himself:  “I could make a better bar than this.”  Today we still want to make things better.  Our food.  Our company.  Even our planet.  We’ll keep working on it.”

Clif Bars are named after Gary’s father Clif.

The product list is quite extensive and includes high fiber, high protein, performance, kids, gluten-free, Kosher, Vegan, Lo-glycemic, no dairy and no nuts and seeds options in just about every flavor you can imagine.

Clif Bars are made with organic ingredients (meaning without the use of toxic pesticides or synthetic chemicals) and they are free from trans fats, hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup because they feel it’s better for the planet, the body and the soul.

Clif Bar has a commitment to “Zero Waste”.  TerraCycle and Clif Bar are working together to reduce the number of energy bar wrappers that would otherwise end up in the landfill, and to educate kids and others about the benefits of reusing materials.  Thus, the Wrapper Brigade was born and schools, offices, community organizations and even individuals can earn money for charity by collecting used wrappers.  For every wrapper the brigade receives, 2 cents will be donated to a nonprofit of the collector’s choice!  Wow!

After enjoying Clif Builder Bars and Clif Bars for the past 7 years, and following Hippocrates’ recommendation – I have found that Clif Bars have been one way I have been able to use “food as my medicine” to improve my health.  I just can’t be more thrilled to have Clif Bars as a Mary-thon sponsor and we wholeheartedly thank them for their generous support.

Sneak Peak:  Watch for the details of our “Pick and Choose Challenge” which will be announced next week.  All Mary-thoners are eligible to participate (Premium Full, Premium Half, Golden and Basic) This special Clif Bar prize – the Nectar Duffle Bag – made from recyclable Clif Bar wrappers – will be awarded to the winner!

Have a wonderful week and Keep Moving Forward!

Mary and Mike

“Blue” Monday Challenge

Published by admin on December 19th, 2011

Cliff Arnall, who is either a really smart person, or has waaay too much time on his hands, has figured out that the 3rd Monday of January, is mathematically the most depressing day of the year.

Here’s his formula (this is real by the way):

I’m a little dubious of the math, but his formula is based on the following:

W = Weather.  Typically really bad weather in January.
D = Debt.  You know, all the debt that is often incurred over Christmas.
T = Time since Christmas.  Christmas is a happy, festive time . . . afterwards a natural “down” occurs.
Q = Failing of New Years Resolutions.  If you go to your local gym, its always packed the first week of January . . . first week of February??  Not so much.
M = Low motivational levels.
Na = Feeling of a need to take action.

Basically what Cliff is suggesting is that cold weather + Christmas debt + failed New Years resolutions = a big depressing realization on the 3rd Monday (or last Monday, depends on which calculator you use apparently) of January.

This year, according to Cliff, the most depressing day of the year will be January 16, 2012.

Mary-thon is determined to make sure that’s not the case!

IF we have 500 Mary-thoners by January 15th – we will draw for a fantastic gift basket on January 16th!  And just so 499 others aren’t even more depressed, we’ll wait to announce the winner on the 17th.

Rules:  Every current Mary-thoner is already entered into the drawing.  For every NEW person who lists your name on their registration from now until January 15th, you get an extra ticket for the drawing!  So, if a current Mary-thoner gets someone to join, the new person will get a ticket, and the current Mary-thoner will get an additional ticket!  The more that register, the more tickets you can get.

Mary-Go-Round Quilt Drawing

Published by admin on December 18th, 2011

On December 16, 2011 we had a drawing for a beautiful quilt, handmade by Mary herself.  Anyone who registered for a 2012 Mary-thon by the end of the day December 15 was eligible for the drawing.  We had 214 Mary-thoners eligible for the drawing.

How did we determine the winner??

Somehow Mary has an old lottery machine.

Yeah, when she told me that, it took me a second to register that info as well.  How/why in the world did she end up with a lottery machine??  I have no idea, but here’s the proof:

I, like much of you I’m sure, am still quite amused that we actually have access to a lotto machine!!

But anyway . . . Mary took 30 ping pong balls and using sophisticated printing equipment (a sharpie) numbered each of the balls 0-9, making sure there were 3 of each number.

The first number drawn:

That eliminated almost half the field . . . by now you should have your bib number, if you don’t know what your bib # is, check your email!  For those of you who don’t know who won the drawing, you can continue this post and continue your own suspense.

The next number drawn:

So, thus far we have 2-6-???  Check your bib #, we’re down to 10 possible winners.

The reason why Mary herself has to do these drawings is because I probably wouldn’t have been smart enough to underline the 6′s . . . making it very confusing as to whether it was a “6″ or a “9″.

That Mary is a smart one . . . and healthy one!

The suspense is probably killing you huh??

So, the final number drawn:

Voila!  The winner is Bib # 2-6-1 !!  Congratulations to Sheila Urwiler!
You know how in the Miss America pageant they always let you know who the Runner-up, and the next Runner-up are?  I guess they want you to know who it is that will be filling the stilettos of the original winner just in case the winner ends up being a horrible person, or, I don’t know, young and naive.  I always thought that was a little cruel . . . you were THIS CLOSE, but nope, not good enough.  Everyone will remember HER, but not HER (notice even Wikipedia couldn’t be bothered to post a picture of Miss Runner-up).

Anyway, we were concerned that perhaps Sheila would be unable to fulfill her duties as the winner of the “Mary-Go-Round” quilt, so we drew a Runner-up and next Runner-up as well.  IF you really want to know if you were THIS CLOSE to winning the quilt, let us know, and we’ll tell you . . . even if it is a little cruel.

Congratulations Sheila Urwiler!

Congratulations to Sheila (Mary-thoner # 261) for winning the “Mary-Go-Round” quilt!

Sheila is from northern Indiana and can’t wait to start her Mary-thon on January 1!  Hopefully the quilt will give her extra motivation and a reminder of all the great things she’s doing for herself and the goodness she contributed to Project Linus.

Congratulations again Sheila!  We hope to hear more about your Mary-thoning in the upcoming months!

We are also pleased to report that December 15 saw us with 232 registered Mary-thoners!  139 of them were registered as Premium Full Mary-thoners, and 40 were registered as Premium Half Mary-thoners!!  Meaning ALREADY, we have donated over $2,685 to Project Linus . . . all through the commitment to health, and caring, of each Mary-thoner!!  Every day we are still getting more registrations.

Thank You So MUCH!  Please invite your friends and family to join you in your Mary-thon.  It will make it more fun for you and for them!
