Mike’s Page

Published by admin on September 7th, 2011

Thanks Mary for coming up with the inspiration of Mary-thon!  I’m thrilled to be a part of it.  This page will an online fitness diary of sorts.  Not long ago I was 5-9 and weighed 239 pounds.  My goal is to be 5-9 and 175 pounds.  In this quest I’ll try to share some insights and experiences from a male perspective, hopefully without embarrassing myself too much.  You’ll soon notice that I will tend to ramble, and I make up words.  In my defense, if they’re not words . . . they should be words.

Please feel free to ask any questions you’d like in the comment section.  I’ll answer all the questions either truthfully or plausibly . . . depends on how much shame I’m feeling.  Unfortunately for my mother, I have a fairly high shame threshold.

cheers,

Mike

What? I’m considered “obese”???

Published by admin on September 7th, 2011

You know what a bad day is?

It’s the day you find out from some government chart that you are classified as “obese”

What the @#$@!!  I know I’m not skinny, but really . . . There is no way I’m “obese”.

Mike’s Intro

Thanks Mary! for letting me be a part of the Mary-thon movement.  I think this whole concept of “Mary-thon” and “Keep Moving Forward” is just spectacular!  As I’m probably into “middle age” territory (when is that by the way?  If most people live to be 75 years old, is 25-50 middle aged?  Sure 50 year olds are middle aged I guess . . . but are 25 year olds?) I find that I need extra motivation to get/stay/be healthy.

The beauty of Mary-thon is the “normalcy” of it.  I used to spend $45/mo for a gym membership, but I hated the testosteronic atmosphere, budgeting 60 minutes for daily exercise can be tedious, “training” for a marathon can be too daunting . . . as Goldilocks would say, 30 minutes a day feels “just right!”  I can do that 5 times a week without feeling enslaved by the process.

So this page will an online fitness diary of sorts.  Not long ago I was 5-9 and weighed 239 pounds.  My goal is to be 5-9 and 175 pounds.  In this quest I’ll try to share some insights and experiences from a male perspective, hopefully without embarrassing myself too much.  You’ll notice that I will tend to ramble, and I make up words (see “testosteronic” above).  In my defense, if they’re not words . . . they should be words.

Something About Mary!

Back in December 2009, while recovering from foot surgery I was contemplating my “theme” for the new year.  (I refuse to make “new year’s resolutions” as they just don’t work for me.)  After much deliberation and consultation with family, I decided my 2010 theme would be “Finish the Race and Finish Strong”.  In 2010 “Life’s Rat Race” was the only race I anticipated running but I have always been intrigued by long distance running.  In fact, one of my life-long dreams was to run a half-marathon. For a variety of reasons, I never made the effort to transform that dream into a reality, however, the more I contemplated my 2010 theme, the more I thought that 2010 could be “my half-marathon year”!  I was at a bit of a disadvantage since I am not very athletic, I had never been on a sports team and I certainly had never run a race of any kind…ever.  With this in mind I didn’t feel comfortable sharing my goal, simply because as a “card-carrying rule follower”, I knew that if I told anyone – that would mean that I made a commitment and I would be obligated to follow through with it.  Thinking realistically, I just wasn’t sure I had the strength within my mind and body to do it.
But I did have a secret motivation(more…)

The time is now!
